How can osteopathy help adults?
Back or neck pain almost always comes with compensations: one area locks up, another works harder, muscles tighten to protect. Osteopathy looks at the whole picture. In practice, it aims to:
- relieve back, neck and shoulder pain;
- restore mobility to the joints and release tight muscles;
- reduce tension linked to stress, screen work or sport;
- help you move again, with advice suited to your daily life.
What happens in a session?
We start by talking: what brings you in, since when, what eases or worsens the pain, your medical history and any treatment. I also check there are no signs that call for a doctor first.
Then comes the examination: posture, mobility, areas of tension. Treatment uses manual techniques adapted to you and your pain. We finish with practical advice for everyday life: moving, setting up your workstation, getting back to activity.
Why keep moving?
For common back pain, the French National Authority for Health recommends staying active and returning to physical activity as soon as possible. Manual techniques are only useful alongside exercise, never on their own. That is why each session ends with pointers you can use at home.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to see a doctor before an osteopath?
No, you can see an osteopath in France without a referral. Some warning signs, however, mean you should see a doctor first: they are listed in the box « When to see a doctor first ».
Osteopath or physiotherapist?
They complement each other. In France, a physiotherapist (kinésithérapeute) usually works on a doctor's prescription, often with exercises. An osteopath works without a prescription, with manual techniques. For back pain, the French National Authority for Health (HAS) stresses that physical activity and exercise remain essential.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on your situation. We review things together at the end of each session and decide whether another one would help.
Is it reimbursed?
Most top-up insurers (mutuelles) and many international insurers cover part of the cost of osteopathy: check with yours. The French national health insurance (Sécurité sociale) does not reimburse it.
